  • Stretch the benefits of exercise.

A healthy idea to think about:

Sandwich your workouts with stretching and you’ll help head off injury, keep joints and muscles limber and perk up your posture. When it comes to stretching however, technique is everything: Warm up before you stretch and gently hold each stretch for no longer than 30 seconds without moving or bouncing.

Consult with your physician before beginning any exercise regimen.

  • Get a workup before you work out.

A healthy idea to think about:

Before you jump off the couch and into the gym, discuss your fitness plans with your physician. Getting the green light is important, especially if you’re out of shape, over 40, have a chronic medical condition or haven’t had a physical since the Clinton administration.

  • Leave no stairs unclimbed.

A healthy idea to think about:

An elevator ride can’t offer the heart-pumping, weight-shedding, stress-busting benefits you get by taking the stairs. Opt for the stairs whenever possible and if your destination is many floors up, compromise by getting off the elevator a few floors early.

  • Restore sanity to your commute.

A healthy idea to think about:

Negotiating traffic snarls can leave your serenity in tatters and your muscles frozen in knots. To mitigate this stress, exercise before you head home after work; you’ll be amazed at how much calmer you feel behind the wheel.

  • No pain, no gain = no fun.

A healthy idea to think about:

You’re not training for the Tour de France, so when you exercise don’t push yourself to the point of collapse. You should be able to carry on a conversation while you work out. Yak it up, have fun, and you’ll gradually build strength and endurance.

  • Exercise by the seat of your pants.

A healthy idea to think about:

If you’re parked in a chair it doesn’t mean you can’t burn calories. Rev your engine by lifting hand weights, stretching or pedaling a stationary bike. So forget the remote, be adventurous and get off the couch to change the channel yourself.

  • Four legs are better than two

Here's a healthy idea to think about ....

If solo strolls leave you staring at sidewalk cracks, find a regular walking partner. You’ll have more fun and be more likely to stick with it. The benefits of pounding pavement include weight loss and a lowered risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, osteoarthritis and cancer.

Remember: Consult with your physician before beginning any exercise regimen.
