  • February is American Heart Month: Be Heart Smart

Did you know that February is American Heart Month, and not because of Valentine’s Day? Every year since its congressional approval in 1963, the President has issued a proclamation to this effect, to help raise public awareness of heart disease. Even though most people associate heart disease with men, it’s also the leading cause of death among women. To raise awareness of this fact, the American Heart Association’s Go Red campaign aims to help women take action against heart disease. So wear your heart on your sleeve by wearing something red today.

Here are some things you can do to help your heart:

    • Limit your intake of fat
    • Choose heart-healthy fats over saturated fats and trans fats
    • Limit your intake of sugars
    • Limit your intake of sodium/salt
    • Choose more whole grains, legumes, fresh produce and low fat dairy products
    • Choose lean meat and poultry
    • Include fish in your diet
    • Exercise portion control
    • Become physically active for 30 to 60 minutes a day
    • Stop smoking
    • Limit your intake of alcohol

Additional information regarding American Hearth Month and heart disease is available from the American Heart Association (AHA), the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Division for Heart Disease Stroke Prevention of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

  • Fun Friday: Super Weekend

This Sunday millions of Americans will huddle around their TVs eating pizza and drinking beer, focusing on the half-time commercials and watching the Patriots and Giants battle it out in Super Bowl XLII. Will the Patriots complete the perfect season and etch their names in the record books or will the underdog Giants play spoiler? And more importantly – which commercial will make you laugh the hardest. Regardless of the outcome – Super Bowl Sunday is one of the best excuses out there for friends, fans and families to get together for a party.

Sunday is also World Yoga Day. Y
oga teachers and schools around the world will donate their time and space for a two-hour yoga session to benefit human rights. World Yoga Day classes are supposed to be held from 11 a.m to 1 p.m local time, allowing you plenty of time to catch the kick-off (or that first commercial). Yoga studios will be accepting donations for human right’s organizations providing you a great opportunity to give back and stay fit. And if you’re a beginner, this is a fantastic way to give it a try for the first time. Check out the World Yoga Day website for participating studios and more information.

So get your remote ready and practice your monkey pose – because Sunday will be full of fun activities.
