    Calcium

What is a good source of calcium if I do not drink milk?

I don't like to drink plain milk either.  I take calcium supplements with my meals to stay on top of my women's health requirements.

I'm not a milk drinker either.  Viactiv (chewables) is a good supplement -- it tastes like chocolate, too!

    Hi Din,

I have Osteoporosis and try to remember to take my calcium supplements at least 3 times a day to get the required 1200 mil I need.  I've read that Calcium Citrate is more absorbable by your body than Calcium Carbonate so I make sure to get Calcium supplements like CitraCal that has Calcium Citrate in it.  I've also read that magnesium and Vitamin D helps your body absorb the calcium more effeciently.  I work out at least 3 to 4 times a week with areobics & weight training as part of my regime.  Bones need weight bearing exercise such as walking and weight training to increase and maintain their density.  I also take a once a month prescription, Boniva.  And last but not least, I try to include foods high in calcium in my daily diet like dark green leafy vegetables such as turnip greens, collard greens and broccoli.  Hope this helps.  Good luck building your bones.

     Regards,

    Bobbie

I was told that you could take Tums with calcium and that would be a sufficient source of calcium.  Good for the tummy, too!

I've heard that TUMS can be a good source of calcium.

I just take a calcium supplement.

But recently I also added vitamin D at the recommendation of my doctor.

    Hi Din

I love milk and drink fat free daily!  but I also try to include fat free yogurt in baked goods, sour cream on my baked potatoes, make my breakfast oatmeal or grits with milk and I take at least one "ADORA" calcium supliment a day they come in milk & dark (the ones I absolutly love).  I have found the Adora supliments at our health food store and Walgreens drugstore.  If you like chocolate you Have to try these, I got burnt out on the viactiv calcium chews real fast but these chocolate suppliments are like having a chocolate kiss or other treat!

I read somewhere that we should have 3 - 1/2 cup servings of dairy a day the Adora help me meet that.

let me know if you try the Adora!

I do not and cannot drink milk and I find that my best sources of calcium is veggies that are dark and leafy green.  At times I do take a calcium supplement called Viactive and this is espcially good because it's like having a caramel chocolate.  This comes in flavors and it's sold in places like CVS, Costco...etc.  I think you might like that if you have a taste for chocolate.

I love milk and almost all of the milk products but still worry about bone density.  I take Adora in the dark chocolate version, they also have a milk chocolate one.  I first found them at our health food store and then at a local Walgreen drugstore.  they are just like eating a chocolate.
